This course is targeted to solving complex vibration problems involving transient and forced vibrations; resonance, isolation and damping; and field and shop balancing. It is partial preparation for the Vibration Analyst Category IV Certification Exam. The workshops and demonstrations, scheduled throughout the training course, are used to illustrate theory and applications.

This course prepares attendees to perform basic vibration analysis on industrial machinery using single-channel measurements, with or without trigger signals, according to established and recognized procedures. It covers basics of sensors, database and data collector setup, data collection, signal processing, fault analysis, and basics of single plane balancing. It is partial preparation for the Vibration Analyst Category II Certification Exam.

This course will discuss the importance of alignment, how to: correct soft foot, check runout, align two pieces of rotating machinery using dial indicators, and to review all the currently used alignment equipment and techniques (e.g. lasers and electromechanical systems). Material from other courses on vibration analysis and anti-friction bearings are usually interjected to supplement the content and assist the attendee in understanding how alignment affects overall machinery performance.

Individuals certified to Category II are qualified personnel who are certified to perform industrial machinery alignments using the Reverse Radial Method and Face-Rim Method according to established and recognized procedures.

Category I Vibration Analysts are qualified to perform a range of single-channel machinery vibration condition monitoring and diagnostic activities including data acquisition on predetermined routes, machine steady state testing to predefined prodecures, and comparison of readings against pre-established alert settings.

Category II Vibration Analysts are qualified to perform basic vibration analysis using single-channel instruments according to established procedures, set-up instruments, and maintain a database of results.

Category III Vibration Analysts are qualified to establish, direct, and perform programs for condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines including spectral, wavefore, and orbital analysis. Category III Vibration Analysts shall be qualified to perform minor corrective actions involving operating deflection shapes, single-plane balancing, and diagnostic testing.

Category IV Vibration Analysts are individuals who understand the theory of mechanical vibrations, advanced vibration analysis techniques, and signal analysis. The shall be qualified to direct condition monitoring programs, perform major diagnostics efforts, and perform and recommned corrective actions and design modifications.

It is important that vibration analysts be familiar with the components, basic mechanisms, and sources of vibrations in rotating and reciprocating machinery so they can accurately diagnose the cause and severity of machine faults. In fact, ISO 18436-2, the Body of Knowledge that vibration analyst certification exams are based on, recommends that certified vibration analysts receive training in this area.

Due to the motion reversing nature of pistons and plungers in reciprocating machines torsional and lateral vibrations are naturally generated continuously. Reciprocating pumps and compressors generate vibration because a slider-crank mechanism is working to move fluid or compress gas. Internal combustion engines have further pulsation disturbances created by cylinder combustion effects. It will be shown how the basic slider mechanism crank mechanism creates lateral and torsional forces.

Over the past 35 years tremendous advances have been made in the diagnosis and severity assessment of rolling element bearing faults. In fact, due to the unique fault frequencies of rolling element bearings, the quality of bearing diagnostics has surpassed that of common once-per-rev diagnostics.
