This course will discuss the importance of alignment, how to: correct soft foot, check runout, align two pieces of rotating machinery using dial indicators, and to review all the currently used alignment equipment and techniques (e.g. lasers and electromechanical systems). Material from other courses on vibration analysis and anti-friction bearings are usually interjected to supplement the content and assist the attendee in understanding how alignment affects overall machinery performance.

It is important that vibration analysts be familiar with the components, basic mechanisms, and sources of vibrations in rotating and reciprocating machinery so they can accurately diagnose the cause and severity of machine faults. In fact, ISO 18436-2, the Body of Knowledge that vibration analyst certification exams are based on, recommends that certified vibration analysts receive training in this area.

Due to the motion reversing nature of pistons and plungers in reciprocating machines torsional and lateral vibrations are naturally generated continuously. Reciprocating pumps and compressors generate vibration because a slider-crank mechanism is working to move fluid or compress gas. Internal combustion engines have further pulsation disturbances created by cylinder combustion effects. It will be shown how the basic slider mechanism crank mechanism creates lateral and torsional forces.
