This one-day pre-conference course will include the basics of induction, synchronous, wound rotor, and DC motor design and cover the most common failure modes associated with each. A discussion on how a combination of static and dynamic testing, including insulation testing, vibration analysis, visual inspections, and electrical motor diagnostics, can be used to detect these failures quickly and accurately and will include several case studies.
A majority of industrial and commercial processes are driven by electric machines. The purpose of this equipment is simply to convert electrical energy to mechanical torque through a combination of mechanical, electro-magnetic, and insulation system components. While most electrical machines are robust, their function as an energy converter makes them susceptible to failure from both electrical and mechanical means in particular environments and conditions.
In this one-day pre-conference course we will discuss the basics of induction, synchronous, wound rotor, and DC motor design as well as cover the most common failure modes associated with each. We will then discuss how a combination of static and dynamic testing, including insulation testing, vibration analysis, visual inspections, and electrical motor diagnostics, can be used to detect these failures quickly and accurately. Case studies from overhung hermetic compressors to hybrid electric vehicle motors will be discussed as well as a few simple rules to cover frequency of inspection/testing.
